Common Rubber Characteristics
Rubber is either a solid or a sponge. Solid rubber is measured in Durometer on the A scale. A car tire is about 70A Durometer. A sponge is either open cell or closed cell and is classified by Type (1 or 2), Class (A, B, C, or D), and Grade (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5).
Rubber may have many desired characteristics, such as temperature, resistance to oil, solvents, weather, other chemicals, abrasion, compression, and tensile strength. More specific characteristics are mandated by organizations or government agencies [FDA Approved, MIL Spec, UL Rated, NSF Certified, NEMA, ASTM, AMS, CE (European Union Certification), RoHS].
EPDM Rubber
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) rubber withstands harsh weather conditions well. EPDM rubber is resistant against UV rays, water, steam, aging, and heat under 350° F. The rubber’s characteristics make it excellent for outdoor use and fair for abrasion and chemicals. Its temperature range is -55 to 300° F, but most commonly -40 to 225° F.
- Common durometers available: 40A-80A
- Rubber durometers (tolerance is usually +/- 5):
Soft: 10A-40A
Medium-soft: 40A-50A
Medium-hard: 50A-70A
Hard: 70A-95A - Color: Black
FDA-Compliant EPDM Rubber
FDA-compliant EPDM rubber is available in white. This rubber is non-marking and safe for contact with food and drinking water. It can be used indoors or outdoors.
